The best way to make a lasting impact on public policy is to change public opinion. MI-UCP is closing the disability divide by changing the climate of public opinion and ensuring a prosperous future for people with disabilities by promoting sound economics and better policy ideas around supports and services.

When we were founded in 1949, having offices in Detroit and Lansing was a requisite. As Michiganders, we knew having a local connection to the legislature would create a long-term advantage. And in fact, the value of this connection has exceeded expectations.

 

We began by working with parents of children with disabilities to provide the best possible answers and information to the larger community. The spirit of that watershed moment has fueled and focused our policy efforts from then on.

 

Over the years, MI-UCP became a leading voice for Michiganders with disabilities. In the 1950s and 1960s, we raised awareness about horrific living conditions in state institutions, leading to the liberation of thousands of people with disabilities from institutional living. 

We also created new housing and support solutions to ensure greater independence and full citizenship for people with disabilities.

 

That combination of advocacy, strategic policy direction and providing services that maximize independence is the hallmark of MI-UCP’s efforts to this day.
